John Crooms, back again with
captures of the happenings
in the ATL…
It was a mellow night for me on Friday in Atlanta so I went to the monthly installment of Tambor over at Django’s to check out special guest producer/ Dj Ian Friday from Tea Party music. When I got there Dj Stan Zeff was getting the early crowd warmed up with his deep house vibes, and accompaning him was Lil John Roberts on the drums. Upstairs the early lounge set was being rocked by Dj Michael Alan with his deep ouse selections. Later on in the evening Ian Friday came on and the crowd exploded into a house music ball...

Early in the summer, Kirei Na wrote a feature on RepJA’s fashions here in the Project. It was a very hot day and yet it didn’t seem to matter. It was an absolutely fun shoot. Jewelry and crochet fashion designer Tara Baker was on set with her video camera, capturing the Behind-The-Scenes.
RepJA is known for its use of Caribbean and American influences to create edgy styles that are the trendsetting fashions in dancehall and American culture. Their distinct creations are affordable and readily available online. RepJA, which began as an a unique dancehall clothing line, has...

earthSista Kirei Na calls Leela James’ Music one of her favorites.
It was on James’ debut album, entitled A Change Is Gonna Come, that was released on ‘05. In the lyrics to the album’s lead single, “Music”, James laments the current state of contemporary popular music. She condemns the glorification of materialism and misogyny that has often been attributed to the lyrical content of contemporary R&B and hip hop songs while pleading for the return of the artistry, dedication, and sincerity displayed by musicians of earlier decades....

Would You Have
Your Body Painted
at an Art Party AND
Would You Want to
Paint on a Body ?
That was the question we were left with at the end of the set of images from the first part of the Art Part on the Roof!
As darkness settled over the city and all of us on the roof at John Glover’s Art Party, folks stepped up to the canvas and painted. Young brothas, cheesed for the camera and worked with the DJ on the music. Periodically, they would cut their eyes over to the earthSistas being airbrushed under the lights.
Off in the cut there were spectators who drank, enjoyed the music and curiously...

Photographers delight in the ability to “paint with light,” to create images that captivate and tantalize the viewer. Like everything else in the universe, this creativity flows in cycles; it waxes and wanes just as the new moon eventually becomes full, then new again. And during those times when we fly upon the wings of creativity, we breathe again, hence the term, “inspire.”
Inspiration can come in many ways. For photographers, we are often inspired by the subjects we shoot. Fortunately, I was given the honor to work with KarenAlise. I was entertaining a concept...

“Everybody’s Favorite Photographer”
Well it’s Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta and that means it was time for House In The Park . All I can say about House In The Park 6 was WOW !!!! This was a event that will go down in history . Atlanta showed out Sunday afternoon, I’m guesstimating over 3000 people descended on Perkerson Park in Southwest Atlanta to hear Djs Kemit , Salah Ananse , Ramon Rawsoul, and Kai Alce play some of the best current and classic House Music . The Vibe at House In The Park 6 was real positive and the energy was good. Children playing...

On a beautiful hot summer day, Habesha, Inc. hosted Organic Fest 8 in Atlanta. It is a benefit event for Habesha’s Black To Our Roots program which assists youth in recognizing and reclaiming their African identity through research and study of African history and culture. Its was an engaging event that included live entertainment, guest speakers and an African marketplace. There was the Kuumba children’s corner, the healers demonstration booth and a very informative lecture and tour on Habesha’s organic gardening activities in the midst of urban Atlanta’s West End.
Black...

“House in the Park is an annual music festival bringing together innovative musicians, DJs, and a diverse audience in a beautiful outdoor park space since 2005. HITP provides a family-oriented atmosphere, and is known throughout the Southeast as the “MUST-attend-event” for avid fans of deep house-music, Afrobeat and soul classics, and attracts over 1,000 people. HITP is held the Sunday before Labor Day, from noon to 8pm in an Atlanta park and is open to the public.”
That’s the statement on their website. I had heard about the event earlier this year; a lot of my friends had...

It was an impulse. She said it would have to be that way.
I met Niemah at the Malcom X Festival back in May and fell in love with her vibe. A very caring, very bright individual, she was an open personality who embraced the idea of simply meeting new people. The day we met, it was evident that she was poetically spiritual Sista. And when I asked her if we could do a shoot one day she said yes in such an immediate fashion that I was sure it was not going to happen. She assured me that it would but we couldn’t plan it. It would just have to be spontaneous.
I was not in the mindset for that...
