pgp231: Valentine’s Day: What’s LOVE Got to Do With It?

Valentine’s Day, like most other holidays, has become another excuse for retailers to get you to buy, buy, buy. In fact, flower companies were the driving force behind the establishment of Valentine’s Day in countries like Sweden, where the holiday didn’t become popular until the 1960s. Love, supposedly the whole point of the day, gets lost in all the commercialism. I’m sure we’ve all heard someone say, or thought to ourselves, “Shouldn’t we tell the people we love how much they mean to us all year long?” What does it say about us if we think we need to buy something to validate our relationships? Really, is there a need for Valentine’s Day at all?

Now, let me play devil’s advocate for a moment. You could argue that Valentine’s Day is a great way to commemorate our love for that special someone; none of us are perfect, and we do get caught up in everyday life, so it helps to set aside a day to say how much we love one another. You could go further and say that it doesn’t have to be all about the gifts-it’s what you and your partner make of it. And besides, is there any harm in expressing your love with a little cash? It doesn’t mean that’s the only way you say, “I love you.”

What do you guys think? Should we focus less on Valentine’s Day, and more on cherishing our loved ones year-round? Can you celebrate Valentine’s Day without feeling compelled to buy something? Have you ever gone against tradition and celebrated in your own little way? We’d love to hear from you!

  1. I honestly forgot about Valentines day. I’m good with or without the gifts. I would love to see the day when relationships go beyond gifts.

  2. Sunset says:

I’m with you, Alexandria. V-day is hardly on my radar. I wish people didn’t need material things to feel good about their relationships. Because what happens when you can’t afford gifts anymore?

  3. Sepia says:

We don’t even buy gifts anymore in my household. We just say “I love you”, give hugs and kisses just like the rest of the 364 days. Everyday is Valentine’s Day.

  4. Sunset says:

I like that, Sepia! It’s good to know that there are folks who express their love year-round.
