Soul Train Line Flash Mob in Atlanta With Anthony David

I went over to Loca Luna to check out The Soul Train Line Flash Mob. This was the brain child of Soul artist Anthony David with the help of Jay Carter of Sol-Fusion . This event was one of many Soul Train Line tributes that happened across America. It was our way of saying thank you to Soul Train creator and host Don Cornelius , who past away on February 1st . When I got there people were trickling in trying to figure out if they missed the event , patrons at Loca Luna were getting nervous as the were seeing folks come in with their costumes and afro wigs on. Dj Loweki was getting the crowd in...

Spread Love Felabration 2011 with DJ Kemit and Rich Medina in the ATL

This past Saturday Night was Spread Love’s annual Felabration party. This party is a celebration of the music and life of Fela Kuti . This Felabration was special because the musical FELA ! was here in Atlanta that week, and it was the 10th anniversary of Rich Medina’s Jump N Funk Party . It was a very good night from the start all the way to the end of the night. When I got there Dj Kemit was getting the vibe started and the spot was packed by 11:00 . Then after Kemit had folks warmed up and dancing, The Darryl Reeves Group came on for a quick live performance of a few of Fela’s...

Visions of Sweet Auburn in Atlanta…

Tonesha Housen Since moving to the Atlanta area, I had been fascinated by the Sweet Auburn Festivals. It makes me feel good to see independent crafters and business owners out there showcasing their talents as well as the many people who walk through—eating, drinking, listening to music and dancing in the streets. The photo that makes me particularly happy is the image I made of the three generations of women holding hands—grandma in the middle and what her Tshirt reads, “Obama got Osama” To me, the image represents another historical, generational moment to be celebrated. I wish I knew...

Sunday School Salah Ananse’s Birthday Party @ Social Resto Atlanta Ga

On Sunday evening I went over to Social Resto to check out this months installment of Sunday School. This was a special night because it was Dj Salah Ananse’s birthday party. When I got there Dj LOX was getting the crowd warmed up, and later in his set drummer Lil John Roberts accompanied the vibes. Later on in the evening Salah came on to keep the evenig groovin the Omar Phillips joined Lil John and it was percussion maddness. To sum it up it was a great night, I’m just mad I had to leave early. But enough of me , lets see the pics . ENJOY! John Crooms “Everybody’s Favorite...

pgp190: RepJA goes Naptually Rude

by earthSista Kire Na RepJA could not have chosen a better set of models. The ladies and gentlemen of Pangea’s Garden were up early that Sunday morning in June to grace the internationally expressed fashions of RepJA! This vibrant and colorfully cultivated and edgy clothing line blends into its style the language, music, and dances of Jamaica with an American twist.  The models were up for the task of showcasing the Pangea’s Garden natural essence, while accentuating RepJA’s Caribbean flair in fashion. RepJA is young, hip, and up-to-date, yet speaks to the tastes of fashion lovers. Spanning...

Atlanta Carnival 2010

The sun was bright and it was hot. And we did not care. We were having too much fun. This year’s carnival theme, “It’s Yours, It’s Mine, It’s Carnival,” celebrated the Caribbean community’s ethnic and cultural diversity. The carnival Akicked off at noon with the Parade of Bands. The parade began in downtown Atlanta on West Peachtree Street and concluded in the Historic Sweet Auburn district. Historic Auburn Avenue has a history of being a rich source African American culture. Its the home Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King, Sr and Jr both pastored, as well as the location...

All the Way Turned Up

With the temperature steadily rising as we cruise into summer, it’s only natural that things get a little steamy around here.  But when I tell you that Black on Black Rhyme’s Take a Load Off Tuesday May 18th show was hot, I don’t just mean the soft humidity that coated my skin before I walked into Studio 281.  The Tallahassee troupe, Back Talk, was in the building, and so were a lot of other talented people. The packed house helped–you know it always gets a little warmer when black folks sit close together.   The faces become more familiar each time, the embraces more...

pgp035: a first moment…Vanisha

I spoke to Vanisha on a the phone a lot before we actually met. We’d hooked up on a Photographer/Model website called Model Mayhem when I’d actually started expanding my technical knowledge in photography and I wanted to work with some models who were expanding their portfolios, figuring we could do a bit a trade off. The idea for Pangea’s Garden was, at best, just a little more than a notion. It was at a time when I thought that the idea might be more self-indulgent than anything and that what I wanted create would not have much of an audience. We did a group shoot with a few...

pgp017: the artist model series – sonia: curves & locs part 2

In this sequel to Curves and Locs at the Apache Cafe & Lounge I experimented with the images a bit, working on different approaches for digital illustration that I’ve been contemplating for while. I liked the affect. This pictorial is part of a short series of retrospectives on my influences and inspirations. The model goes by the stage name DarknCurvy and you can find her on MySpace.
