BlackGirlsKillingIt (BGKI) is the brainchild of Neil Alvin. Its an extraordinary Tumblr blog featuring images of well-dressed, impeccably-styled black women. Periodically, BGKI features an interview with a sista whose personal style is unique and fabulous. In this post, BGKI interviews Folake Kuye Huntoon, editor of StylePantry.com, the “fashion and lifestyle stockiest.”

How would you define your personal style?

I’d say it’s Three’s company meets Woodstock meets Today’s fashion!

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I have always played by my own rules, but I also follow fashion trends for the job. It’s possible to see a sprinkle of “trendy” items in some of my looks.

Are there any colours you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

Probably black. That’s because where I’m from (Nigeria), you only wear black when you are mourning the loss of a family member. But I’m learning to incorporate black pieces here and there.

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

Damn! She served! Do I need to translate that?

Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?

I’m naturally a confident person. I don’t “dress” to please or to be critiqued. If you like it great, if you don’t more power…

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I have always been into clothes. So much so that my father enrolled me into a fashion school at the age of 15.

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

Not at all. I’m quite low key 🙂

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I’m blessed in such that I work for myself – which means no dress codes. To be honest, I don’t think my outfits through. I wake up in the morning, open up my closet(s) and get inspired. However, I do have three kids that I chase after on a daily basis, so I put that into consideration 🙂

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

Wearing leggings as pants.

What is your favourite trend right now?

I’m partial to the whole 70s theme 🙂

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

I have a clothing line. I have always had one. WeWeClothing.com – Which just got picked up byZulily.com, so all feature designs will be for them, sold by them.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

They are way too may to mention. I’m drawn to bohemian inspired pieces from high to low end.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

  • Faux fur vest
  • Maxi dress or skirt
  • 6 inch platforms
  • big sunnies
  • big bag
