Exactly one week ago, I was sitting in this very spot, checking out my favorite blogs, when I came across a story about a new group named KING on Soul Bounce. The group is made up of twins Paris and Amber Strothers and their friend, Anita Bias. I was instantly sold on KING, and couldn’t wait for their EP, The Story, which was released this past Tuesday. I began to follow them on Twitter (@wearekingmusic), and that’s when I began to feel like I was a part of something truly magical.

When I started following them on Twitter, they had roughly 150 followers. By the end of the day on Tuesday, they had well over 1,000. The Story, made up of only three songs, captivated so many people that they became a trending topic in LA. Eventually, so many people were singing their praises that it caught the attention of Phonte (@phontigallo) of the Foreign Exchange, which caught the attention of Questlove (@questlove) of The Roots. And then, today, this happened:

@wearekingmusic get at me

None other than Ms. Badu, the patron of saint of new soul, had jumped on the bandwagon. I’m sure the ladies of KING weren’t expecting to receive such acclaim so quickly, but it’s well-deserved. Their harmonies are sweet and ethereal, and their production somehow manages to be a good mix of new and familiar. This is the kinda stuff that pushes music to evolve while remaining completely accessible. The kind of music that’s easy to fall in love with. And that’s why they became so popular on Twitter; the Phonte, Questlove, and Badu co-signs were only byproducts of the praise heaped on them by regular folks, like you and me, who fell in love with how refreshing their music is.

I love this story. It’s a reminder that good music still lives, and that regular folks (like you and me) still listen to it. The evolving, fascinating world of social media creates a space where we can all share it with one another and interact directly with its creators. We can be witness to their dreams coming true, while they become the soundtrack to our daydreams. And that’s really beautiful.

Check out their video for The Story below.
