We’ve all been there: driving down the street, shooting our own personal music video in our car, when we spot a co-worker or acquaintance in the next lane over. And that person insists on waving and/or chatting. At Every. Single. Red. Light. It’s awkward, and it’s one of those situations that we think only happens to us.

Fortunately, we have filmmaker Issa Rae to make light of this and other situations that the average black girl finds herself in. Issa has developed a series called “The Misadventures of the Awkward Black Girl,” a hilarious, honest look at life as a young, black woman.

Her voice is unique; she speaks for those of us who aren’t celebrated by the mainstream. The sisters who love to laugh at themselves and with each other; who don’t need Madea to remind them that they can do bad all by themselves; who may not be where they want to be in life, but aren’t so depressed that they identify with the downtrodden negress that the mainstream news media has fallen in love with.

Issa has tapped right into our experiences, and she’s been able to frame them in a way that hasn’t been done in quite some time. If black women want a funny, real take on our lives, where do we go? With TV shows like Girlfriends and Living Single off the air, we need a new comedic take on our experiences in the 21st century, preferably one with a sister at the helm. Issa’s got that on lock. Peep a video below, and check out her website. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what (mis)adventures she gets herself into next. God, I love the internets!
