Its called the Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Health & Beauty Show. Can you say the whole name right?
Nobella of Pangea’s Lookbook fame attended the 16th Annual Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Health & Beauty Show for the her very first time. And, not only did she have a blast, the attendees (more than 30,000 this year according to the show’s event coordinator, Pat Chapman) were thrilled to see her. As she entered the large showroom floor, heads turned, marveling at her own personal style, charisma and glamour. In fact she did not walk more than ten steps before she was beset by sightseers wanting to take pictures of her and with her. And as fascinated as the spectators were of her, Nobella was equally mesmerized by the extravaganza. If only she could get the name right. (LOL)
This was the 16 consecutive year of the Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Health & Beauty Show and the event was larger than ever. Held at the Georgia International Convention Center near the Atlanta’s Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport, the event, founded by the Queen of Natural Hair, Taliah Waajid, is the largest natural hair show in the country. Along with the likes of show staples like Taliah Waajid’s Natural Hair Care Products and Jamaica Mango & Lime Hair Products there were the afrocentric offerings of Nyemay’s Collectables, the sporty product line of Fice Tshirts, the scientifically formulated products for your complexion by Corrective Skin Care and the clothing and accessories of B. Natural Apparel just to name a few. Folks came from all over the country and beyond to display their wares. There were 238 vendors at this year’s spring show.
The tens of thousands of patrons delighted at the opportunity to discover new products, witness the hair shows and demonstrations, meet their favorite bloggers and learn more about the care of their natural hair. And while women and men alike were drawn to the spectacle by their common interest in the nurture and care of their natural hair, all, quickly, realized that the culture fostered here was broader than the confines of ones own locs and fros. Through its various vendors and workshops, its spoken word performances, stage singers, fashion shows, inspiration speakers and glamours hair exhibitions its became apparent that the interests of the attendees were complex and wide-ranging. In a way it was a celebration of the culture that cultivated our inner (as well as outer) beauty. It IS the beauty that runs deep.
The price for attending Taliah Waajid’s World Natural Hair Show ranges from $5 for each day of the two-day event for a general admission ticket to $10/day for the Expo Plus admission. There’s also special ticket pricing for the Barber competition and Beauty Student Two-Day admission. However if you participated in just one workshops you got your money’s worth and, according to Nobella, the vendors’ special show prices more than made for those entry fees. The show’s message is love of total body through healthy living. Through workshops, networking, and music, the show provides a welcoming place where people come and become more empowered. It is also a place to celebrate family. The next show will be held April 27-28 and we will share more details as the date approaches. We hope to see you there.
